| San Antonio, TX...469 Teams antied up $1000 apiece to compete in the 28th Annual George Strait Team Roping Classic. The roping began precisely at 10AM sharp. .
A new roping format this year put all of the ropers in groups of 35-50 teams Each team roped their first and second go-round steers before giving the arena to the next group, The new format allowed ropers who were also competing in Austin and Houston, the opportunity to compete in either or both of the other ropings. In addition it made a shorter day for cowboys and horses as many were able to go after they were finished.
George Strait roped with three different partners but did not qualify for the finals.
Jo Jo Lemond and Micheal Jones won the first go-round with a time of 3.96 seconds earning them $7,042 apiece. Second place went to Ty Blasingame and Matt Zacanella with a 4.31 worth $4226 each while 3rd place went to Colby B. Siddoway and Brandon Bates with a 4.39 earning the duo $2,817 each.
The se ond go-round went to Kaleb DFriggers and Brad Culpepper with a time of 4.33 worth $8451 each, followed by Britt C. Williams and Jimmie R. Copper who took second place with a time of 4.56 worth $6338 each. Third place money of $4226 each went to Cory W. Kidd and Adam G. Plyler with a time of 4.67 and 4th place went to Wes Goodrich and Austin Adams with a time of 4.69 worth $2113 each.
If that wasn’t exciting enough, Actor James Pickens, Jr., best known as Chief Richard Webber on the ABC series, 'Grey's Anatomy,' was spotted at the event and it seems San Antonio hosts quite a number of the show’s fans including Strait’s niece Kara Strait Silva.
“You can’t say I’m obsessed really but I am a HUGE Grey’s fan!” said Silva. “I was actually nervous!”
Pickens enjoys roping in his spare time and is a member of the United States Team Roping Championship. He recently founded a non-profit charity called, the James Pickens Jr. Foundation, which will host its first annual roping event at the Tejon Ranch Equestrian Center in Lebec, California on April 22, 2010.
